Biography
Following his Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Mannheim (DHBW Mannheim), Mr. Nils Nemsow gained experience in power electronics and control during his five-year occupation as a traction control engineer with Alstom / Bombardier Transportation (Alstom in Germany). After having received a Master’s degree in electromobility, a specialization area of electrical engineering, from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), he is now working at the Institute for Technical Physics (ITEP) as a PhD candidate.
His area of research is the simulation and modeling of hydrogen-based energy storage systems for grid integration. The goal is to develop several multi-modal models with different modelling complexity and to evaluate the accuracy of each model depending on the analyzed system phenomena. In the end, the best compromise between complexity and computation time will be chosen and, based on real time simulation and power hardware-in-the-loop, a digital twin of the fuel cell and electrolyzer system will be realized.
Experience abroad
Name: Nils Nemsow
Time period: January – June 2024
Institution: U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
Location: Denver, Colorado, USA
As the first member of the Energy Lab, I traveled to Denver in January 2024. We are starting the collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States and KIT in Germany to find out more about commonalities in our research. Working on the integration of hydrogen components into electrical grids, I was pleasantly surprised about the linking points between their and my research. I could carry in my expertise on the area of electrolyzer and fuel cell modeling, while at the same time gaining a lot of practical knowledge about digital real-time simulation. In fact, several research topics of NREL and KIT in the area of hydrogen and grid integration complement each other, making this collaboration particularly fruitful. As of July 2024, we organized at least two other similar research stays of Energy Lab members at NREL, driving our joint research activities forward. Having returned in June 2024, I know for sure that this won’t be my last trip to the NREL campus in beautiful Colorado.
